About The Event

An advertisement joins together a product or a service as a signifier, with a signified meaning which is carefully constructed. Visual metaphors are often used to catch the eye of the viewer, attract attention and communicate messages. Semiotics as a science that studies and analyses how meaning and signs work within a particular context can provide a design framework for understanding, constructing and extracting meaning in advertisements. With emphasis given on the concept of visual metaphor, workshop participants will be asked to produce visual metaphors in the context of advertising, and for a product, brand or service of their own.

Company/Designer: Evripides Zantides.

Evripides Zantides is Associate Professor of Graphic Communication at the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts at Cyprus University of Technology. His professional activities include the presentation of research papers at a number of journals and international conferences on semiotics, graphic design education, typography and visual communication, and his participation, with distinguished work, in refereed Art and Graphic Design exhibitions. He is involved as a reviewer in scientific journals, in educational, conference and exhibition evaluation committees and he is the delegate for Cyprus in the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI), as well as in the International Association for Semiotic Studies (IASS-AIS).
