What is typography and why typography matters ? The workshop takes you through the basics and need-to-know skills to create design works. This includes learning history of typography, anatomy, usage of typography, the theory of typographic relativity and more. You will also receive hands-on exercise on the language of typography, what is the relationship between paper and type, readability and legibility of type design, etc.
Participants will deepen their understanding of typographic tone, what sounds look like, and the relationship between visual and verbal language. The workshop targets students, designers and creative practitioners interested in learning more about typography.
Farah Abdel Hadi UAE born and raised graphic designer, Arabic typographer and design educator. She is a current Ph.D. candidate in Graphic Communication and Typography at Cambridge, UK. Holding MA in Graphic Design and Typography from Nottingham Trent University, UK.
Abdel Hadi taught and practiced design in UK, topics such as: branding, editorial design, typography: creating synergy between Arabic and Latin script., and creative arts.
Farah’s ongoing research study aims to examine the modern history of Arabic type in 20th century : The reforming projects of Arabic type submitted to the Academy of Arabic Language in Cairo in 1930s. The study will provide a retrospective view of issues identified in the 1930s, some of which still have relevance for contemporary type design. She is also working on several projects involving UAE banknote design campaign with professor Will Hill, as well as, environmental plastic-free desert campaign in collaboration with Wander.ae
