Color: Its secret life
Date: 16th November, 2017
Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Location: Re: Urban Studio, Dubai Design District, Building 7, Unit 107-B
Color is the heart of a space—a space glows through its color. Color is always reaching out to us. Color: Its Secret Life focuses on the idea that color has laid deep roots in the human psyche—that it carries meaning, and can inspire awe or instill terror. It can make us feel distress when we enter a space, or it can appease us when we see a work of art. This workshop/conversation is planned as an intricate play across disciplines, generations and cultures. For example, the architect AnaMaria Torres is from Spain, but grew up in the Sahara Desert; she now works in the USA and spends half her time in Abu Dhabi. Her life is a tapestry of tradition and modernity—and her approach to color is both influenced by all those elements and influences the way she works in architectural design. This workshop will allow participants to have conscious encounters with color. The first will be through the experience of two rooms with distinctly different color themes. Those spatial experiences will allow us to explore our basic statement: Color influences us personally. It will then lead the way to applying an understanding of our color responses to interior design and art. The second segment of the workshop will comprise a conversation with two masters of color tradition expressed through calligraphy—Ali al Doury, master calligrapher, artist and head of the Sharjah Centre for Arabic Calligraphy and Ornamentation; and calligraphy and light artist Karim Jabbari.
